The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier

The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier spins off from a central premise: what if, when we die, we pause on the way to our final destination until the last of those who knew and remember us have also passed away? Brockmeier builds on this idea using a narrative split between different individuals who live in The City of remembered dead and a lone woman stranded in Antarctica on a research mission gone wrong, musing on love, memory, and loss along the way. The pacing is slow and the language takes center stage in this short work. The relaxed pacing meant I could enjoy exploring the premise with each of the characters, even as the ending becomes unavoidable. Lyric speculative fiction for an afternoon’s contemplation.
